GLOOMY SUNDAY

Szomorú vasárnap, Gloomy Sunday, was the name of the song, that had been written by Hungarian composer Seress Rezső in 1930-s in Budapest. Till now the dark legend is connected with this melancholic tune: it is regarded as capable of rousing suicidal motives in a listener.
These figurines are inspired by the characters of the German-Hungarian film Gloomy Sunday – A Song of Love and Death (1999), the composer András and Ilona, his muse. Their roles were played by Stefano Dionisi (mostly famous for performing title role in Farinelli, 1994) and the beautiful Hungarian actress Marozsán Erika.
This film, these characters and the song itself mean something special to me. Inspired by the story of the song I wrote a historical novel Twilight Melody. The story takes place in a made-up country after Second World War, and the mystical part receds to the background. The book deals mainly with the complicated relations between the characters and the questions of ethic and price of the art, but the Twilight melody remains the leitmotif of the plot.
I've seen the film after that and was amazed to find out that it's authors treated the legend just the same way: the song, the time and scene of action were authentic, but the characters were not the historical persons and the song served just as a soundtrack to the story of love and death. And Stefano and Erika would be the best choice for the roles of my own personages!
The height is app. 22 cm. Materials that are used: the frame of iron wire, foil; sculpey premo polymer clay, fimo doll art professional, fimo miniaturen; real silk and premium mohair for hair; acrylic paint and varnish for the face; copper wire, rhinestones, glass beads, leather, silk, crepe de Chine, satin, hand embroidery; brass wire, fishing line for the strings; base filled with cork; cardboard, idigo mineral paste.
András should have played the piano, but it would be too big and bulky accessory for a miniature, so I made the violin instead, a more romantic instrument and traditionally associated with Hungary. Ilona holds a lily in her hands. The vest and coat of András are of silk with narrow raised stripes, and the Ilona's Hungarian style blouse is decorated with miniature hand emroidery.
If you're interested in purchasing them, you can ask any questions concerning price, shipping or anything else contacting me by contact form.
